Information Technology

  • The ICT sector contributes 8.2% to the country’s manufacturing GDP.
  • It generates revenues of over UD$29bn.
  • Spending in the IT sector alone was at US$10.6bn in 2010.
  • Internet users totalled 5.3 million in early 2010 representing a 10% penetration.
  • Gartner identified South Africa as one of only 3 African countries to be ranked in the global top 30 countries for outsourced activities in 2010/2011.

The Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering, located at Wits University is one of two accredited organisations on the African continent to offer CMMI certification.

The sector is at the forefront of the use of technology to address infrastructure gaps:

  • e-Schooling, e-Government and e-Health; 
  • Prepayment for basic services.

Innovations include applications in:

  • Mobile money and payment systems;
  • Asset tracking and security;
  • SIM based metering; and
  • Wireless applications.
