Company profile
Kelman was set up in 1994 as a company that would design and supply unique, high added value products to the UK electrical power market. The company’s first main revenue stream was in the fault management arena, designing a range of innovative products that allowed the Regional Electricity Companies (RECs) to better react to fault conditions. This combination of new technology and the penalties associated with power delays and outages in the increasingly regulated UK market place meant that Kelman’s products could be sold at premium prices. In 2000 two of Kelman’s Fault Management products, Rezap and Fusemate, were awarded ‘Millennium Product’ status by the UK government.
Having gained expertise in designing equipment with complex electrical switching arrangements, in 2001 an opportunity arose in the rail sector. Although significant investment was being made to improve the UK’s rail infrastructure it became apparent that track signalling technology was still very outdated. The high profile West Coast Route Modernisation (WCRM) with a budget of £13.5bn is aimed at running high speed trains between London and Glasgow. WCRM had proposals from its major suppliers to install an extremely expensive new signalling system. Kelman realised that using its current switching technology it was possible to offer a far more efficient system.
Product & services
Transformers:
TRANSPORT X
The TRANSPORTX equipment uses new technology to give accurate, reliable Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) results on-site in a matter of minutes. The TRANSPORTX represents an invaluable tool for Asset Management and will increase the power of any DGA program. Extensive field and laboratory use worldwide has proven the TRANSPORTX gives highly reliable results and the unit is genuinely suitable for field conditions with no consumables.
TRANSFIX
Accurate insight of the condition of transformers is essential for all electrical networks and on-line monitoring of critical transformers has become increasingly important. The knowledge gained from closely monitoring expensive transformers can maximise its longevity and avoid expensive failures. Transfix has already been fitted to 10% of the biggest transformers in Africa.
