Powertech Transformers, previously known as ABB Powertech Transformers based in Pretoria West, is 80% owned by Power Technologies (Pty) Ltd (Powertech), the largest power-electrical group in Southern Africa and 20% owned by Power Matla.  Powertech, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Altron (Allied Electronics Corporation Limited). Powertech is focused on delivering advanced technologies for the creation, management, distribution, storage and use of electricity across industries.
Power and distribution transformers for the African continent are manufactured by Powertech Transformers at its operations in Pretoria West, Cape Town and Johannesburg.The Pretoria West facility is the biggest and most sophisticated transformer manufacturing plant in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. The range of transformers manufactured by Powertech Transformers cover three-phase and single-phase units, auto-transformers, shunt reactors, rectifier transformers including many others which are tailor-made to meet customers' exact requirements.

Every Powertech Transformers' unit is custom-made from standardised design elements and using standardised manufacturing operations. This flexible, but well co-ordinated approach ensures the highest quality of design and construction for all our transformers and makes the best possible use of the valuable knowledge and experience gained from our technology agreement with ABB and best practices developed in our factory.

Powertech Transformers is also one of South Africa's largest and most experienced manufacturer of power distribution products. Designed, tried and tested under the harshest of African conditions, our distribution transformers and miniature substations have proven themselves for more than 60 years.  Our experience ensures its products are manufactured to meet the needs of local conditions while meeting all major national and international standards.  Our products are in use in utilities, local authorities, mines, industrial plants and motor manufacturers.

Product & services

The group has the facility to design and manufacture some of the largest power transformers in the world - up to 795MVA, 500kV as well as distribution transformers from 16kVA to 20MVA.

Miniature substations from 200kVA up to 1600kVA 33kV

LNER’s & NECRT’s

Shunt reactors up to 500kV and industrial transformers up to 100kA are also manufactured.
